Computer-Related Crime Act

The Thai cybercrime statute (B.E. 2550, amended 2017) whose §14 criminalises online speech that duplicates and amplifies criminal defamation under §326–328.

The Computer-Related Crime Act B.E. 2550 was enacted in 2007 and substantially amended in 2017. Sections 14(1) and 14(2) criminalise the input of "false" or "distorting" computer data, with five-year statutory maxima — provisions routinely used to prosecute online journalism, social-media speech, and political commentary. Because the same content can be charged simultaneously under §14 and under Criminal Code §326–328 (criminal defamation), prosecutors can multiply penalties for a single act of speech. Several reform proposals on this site advocate repealing §14(1)–(2) and limiting criminal speech offences to genuine incitement to imminent violence.
