Section 116 (Thai Criminal Code) — Sedition
The Thai sedition statute. Seven-year maximum for speech that "causes people to violate the laws" or "raises unrest". Routinely used against peaceful protest.
Section 116 of the Thai Criminal Code criminalises acts done "to bring about a change in the laws" or "to cause unrest" — worded broadly enough to reach organising a peaceful protest, publishing critical commentary, or advocating constitutional reform. The maximum is seven years' imprisonment per offence. Since 2020, §116 has been charged in combination with §112 lèse-majesté and Computer-Related Crime Act §14 against pro-democracy protest leaders. Bail is not automatic but is granted more often than for §112.
